How to Split a Song Into Stems (Vocals, Drums, Bass & More)
Learn how to split any song into separate stems — vocals, drums, bass, and other — with AI, for remixing, sampling, and production.
Stems are the individual building blocks of a song — the vocal, the drums, the bass, and everything else — as separate audio files. Producers use them for remixes, mashups, sampling, and live sets. Here's how to pull clean stems out of any track.
What are stems, exactly?
A finished song is a mix of many parts bounced down to one stereo file. Splitting it into stems reverses that: AI estimates each part and exports it on its own, so you can mute, solo, and process them independently.
A typical 4-stem split gives you:
- Vocals — the lead (and often backing) voice
- Drums — kick, snare, hats, percussion
- Bass — the low end
- Other — guitars, keys, synths, and everything else
How to split a song into stems
- Open a stem splitter.
- Upload your track (MP3, WAV, or FLAC).
- The AI separates the mix into individual stems in seconds.
- Download each stem, or open them in the Studio to mix.
4 stems or 6?
Most projects are fine with 4 stems. If you need more control, a 6-stem split also separates guitar and piano from the "other" bucket — useful when you want to isolate a riff or a chord part.
Getting studio-quality stems
- Export lossless. Use WAV or FLAC so you're not stacking MP3 artifacts in your DAW.
- Work from the best source. Higher-bitrate inputs separate more cleanly.
- Fix bleed in the mix. A little residual bleed is normal; EQ and gating in your DAW clean it up fast.
Use the stems in your DAW
Once exported, drag each stem onto its own track in Ableton, Logic, FL Studio, or whatever you use. From there it's a normal mix — swap the drums, re-pitch the vocal, chop the bass, build your remix.
